SOUTH FLORIDA ATTRACTIONS

South Florida Attractions are varied and offer great day trips within driving distance of the Naples and Fort Myers area.

Some wonderful day trips are:

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
is operated by The National Audubon Society. Visitors can walk through five distinct habitats on a 2.25 mile long raised boardwalk. Located north east of Naples, it is one of Marcia’s family’s favorite places in the area.

Babcock Ranch is a working cattle ranch with the bonus of offering wilderness adventure tours. You will enjoy your day seeing wildlife in an Old Florida setting.

Shy Wolf Sanctuary is located east of Naples. They specialize in rescuing exotic animals. Visitors will see wolves, wolf dogs, gopher tortoises, foxes, and cougars. For information about the Sanctuary, contact them at (239) 455-1698.

Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is located on the subtropical barrier island of Sanibel. Visitors can take their own car, bike, or walk the four mile round trip through the sanctuary. It is a great place to see migratory birds and experience the mangrove ecosystem. Try to arrange your visit at low tide if you want to see birds feeding.

Rookery Bay is located just east of Naples. It is a National Estuarine Research Reserve offering a wonderful learning center. Volunteers and resource management staff work to monitor and assist in the survival of Loggerhead Turtles. They are opened five days a week throughout the week and Saturdays during the busy winter season. Contact them for further information at (239) 417-6310.

Shark Valley at Everglades National Park is located east of Naples on Hwy 41. Visitors can cover the fifteen mile paved trip via bicycle or by taking the two hour guided tram ride. There is a 45 foot high observation deck near the half way point that gives a twenty mile view of the Everglades. For further information, contact them at (305) 221-8455.

Echo Global Demonstration Farm is an organization that fights world hunger by constantly developing innovative agricultural techniques as well as ways to purify drinking water in any situation.

Edison Ford Winter Estates is rich in history and is a celebration of two great Americans, Thomas Alva Edison and Henry Ford. It is a great place for young and old alike.
